When you say "X is the best, period", how sure are you? Everyone (naturally) tries to watch things they have a better chance of enjoying, so that as your watched list grows the probability of finding a new favorite ought to decrease, if only by elimination. If you are in the hundreds, you have more or less well-defined preferences, and have watched or at least know about what exists in your favorite genre(s). If you're above 1K, the best you can look forward to is obscure stuff (unless you're consciously avoiding popular shows). Do you think there's still some dark horse out there that can top your current favorites? Or would it have to be something not yet made? To put it another way: how many times have you switched favorites since you started watching anime? Can you remember you list of past bests? How long have you stuck with the current ones? When will you change your mind again? EDIT: On second thoughts, and after 400+ votes, I think the poll could have been worded better, avoiding the word "best". Some people use "best" and "favorite" interchangeably, but others don't, and so some replies have been along the lines of "there is no objective best", which was not the intention and is discussed in every other thread anyway. My bad. It should have been something like this: Do you think anything will replace your current favorite show? ○ Yes, surely. ○ I don't know. ○ Not something that already exists, would have to be something new. ○ Never, not even shows not made yet. Too late now. Anyway, thanks for all the replies. |

Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu Season 1. Not just the best anime but the best show that I've ever seen. And I'm confident that it'll be pretty hard for a show to top this (atleast for me) |

Absolutely not. I'm always under the belief that there's something out there that can outshine even the best thing in my eyes. I still have a long way to go in my anime journey, and I look forward to finding these golden moments :) |

Ya. As you say, the more anime you watch the more you're able to refine down your tastes and you slowly learn about all the different things that will resonate with you. All the things that resonate with me are displayed to perfection in monogatari.. I simply don't think it's possible for me to love another show more. However, I don't really think that matters. There are gonna be plenty of anime that I fall in love with even if they aren't my number 1. |

My top 3 (Watamote, Lucky Star, Madoka Magica) have been consistent for most of my anime career, but I voted no because I'm still trying to find the best anime out there. Honestly, it would take a earthquake to shake that trifecta, and nothing I'm watching right now seems to be able to beat them. But that won't stop me from looking. |

When you say "X is the best, period", how sure are you? after 1000 entries, I'm very sure. but I'm nonstop trying to disprove it. the best you can look forward to is obscure stuff (unless you're consciously avoiding popular shows). I'm usually watching obscure stuff and have a blast with them. I'm also avoiding popular shows. not in a hipster way though. the summary, art or something I know about the show makes me not care. Do you think there's still some dark horse out there that can top your current favorites? I don't think they can top or replace them, but I'm 100% sure that they can find a place in my heart and I can call them favorites the exact same way. Or would it have to be something not yet made? there' still good anime being made, just have to look harder now with how much is being produced. To put it another way: how many times have you switched favorites since you started watching anime? maybe once or twice. mal favorites don't represent every single show I love. Can you remember you list of past bests? no, but it doesn't matter. I can just rearrange my list by score. How long have you stuck with the current ones? years. When will you change your mind again? when I find something mindblowing. with my current stats, 1193 completed I think it's safe to say that: I liked 567 entries, with about every 50th show being an amazing experience. I don't count 5/10 as good, it's so mediocre I wouldn't watch it with the same knowledge. dropped 135 shows, you mustn't be afraid to drop things that you don't like. my plan to watch list is always growing even like this that I nonstop watch stuff from it. last time I checked it was 120, and I'm sure I watched at least 60 entries since then. my primary motivation is the same as ever, to find something better than eva. it's not going well, but I havn't given up. it doesn't make the journey less fun. my last completed goal was to get to 1000 watched entries. current goal is to watch everything downloaded. I saw half of that already. future goals: watch everything by gainax. (this is also underway, saw half of them roughly) |

There's no such thing as the best anime of all time, we can only pick out the best and the worst once something concludes, so as of now, new masterpiece anime keep getting made and so there's no such thing as the greatest anime... |

I believe I have, with One Piece. Yes, I understand perfectly well that the pacing during arcs like Dressrosa is completely ghastly, however, no show has come close to how my heart is attached to each and every character. No show has come close to how emotional I've felt during some of the greatest-written backstories I've ever seen. And no show has presented me with such a fascinating adventure like One Piece has. It currently has close to 1000 chapters, however, I would happily take 5000 more, and I am dead serious when I say that. It's such a shame that some people won't touch it ever merely because of its length, I know for a fact there are people out there who will never touch it, despite it having a high chance of being their favorite show ever made. As they say, the only people who truly hate One Piece are those who've never touched it. |

I'm always open to the possibility of having a new favorite anime in my list. Even though I put Naruto at the top of my list of favorite anime, it's moreso out of respect for the childhood memories I have watching it. That's not to say that I don't love the series of course. But since I've spent a lot of years watching it and the series is over, I'm looking for new shows that can give me the same excitement that I had watching it when I was young. Through the years, I've been impressed by countless titles of anime. Ashita no Joe, Hajime no Ippo, Saint Seiya: The Lost Canvas, the Seven Deadly Sins, etc. |

I don't even consider it the best show ever. Even then, there can be bad sequels or additional entries to the franchise that can bring down the entire franchise's score down. Also a perfect adaptation of something like say Berserk from start to finish would certainly be up there if there never had been shitty adaptations in the first place. As for the darkhorse in favorites. I'm doubtful since older entries have quite the number of entires that could weigh the episode down. Favorites has changed quite frequently especially if changing positions of exactly where the franchise is placed. Of course quite a bit has to do with my definitions of favorites have slightly altered (overall weighted score including noncanon entries then redefining franchise then peak and volume then to currently overall weighted score canon only + episode count factored in as a minuscule fractional plus) . I can remember the previous ones I had as my favorites initially as I've been tracking the franchise scores before I even got this account. I've last changed it early 2020. I'm pretty sure once I watch GiTS 2045, that might be a cause for favorites to change unfortunately. The favorites |

That's a pretty hard question. Hunter x Hunter (2011) has been on my top favorite for over four years so so far yes, I think so; however, it can't beat my love for my top two favorite manga. So if any of those two ever get a second season, adapted properly by good studios this time,(Bones, MAPPA, Wit, etc.) then I know one of them will be able to beat HxH. But I doubt it'll ever happen, so I guess it's a tentative "yes" for now. |

Nope as I do not believe their is a single anime that can be labelled as the best ever made. Art is subjective and what might be the best anime for one may be a trash anime for others. For example their are people who believe Attack on titan is trash while others consider it the greatest show ever made. People who believe their opinions are facts and go around spouting nonsense like "xyz" is the greatest thing ever are just idiots who don't know how to handle a criticism. |

This is probably subjective. There are some shows called "the best of the season/year/decade" that I have watched but did not really suit my tastes even through the years. As for me, I think I already saw that in both FMAB and Evangelion. Madoka got too close to the two as well. Nothing can change my mind. |

No, I don't think I've seen the best anime ever made. Yes, I do and still believe that Puella Magi Madoka Magica and Princess Tutu are the best TV anime I have ever seen. But I'm saying no because I don't think I've seen all that anime has to offer. I'm sure there are lots of anime out there, or anime that have yet to be released or even conceived, that can be as amazing as those two series were or at least get a decent 8-9 score from me. |

No, I stopped caring about this idea, because at some point, it's pretty hard to compare shows I have seen at different period in my life. I’m rather in a perspective where I hope I’ll still love Japanese animation with time. For this matter, I’m confident this medium will always bring fantastic series that will show me why I love so much anime. |

My problem with this is not having one anime that I consider being best. Like there are 50-60 titles that I consider really good but can't choose only one, since I like them for different reasons. And nowadays we are getting shows that are a bit different from those from the past so there is always a chance that some of those will surprise me in a good and different way. |
